Greenoptions.com - let's have some wiki synergy!

I've mentioned Appropedia, the wiki for sustainability, appropriate technology and international development. I've just discovered that another green wiki has been started, at Green Options. I have mixed feelings about this. It's great when people want to do something, and a wiki is a fantastic way to collaborate, to pool our knowledge.

But the good is the enemy of the best. Even a good site can be a distraction, if it draws people in but fails to provide the best available content and the most vibrant community. And the best way to provide those things is to work with likeminded people who are already working on the same thing.

WikiGreen recently made the decision to merge with Appropedia - our vision was so similar, it made sense to merge. And tonight I've just received notice that one of the "Engineers Without Borders" organizations is planning to integrate their wiki with Appropedia, for the better visibility and networking. (I'll post again when it's confirmed - I'm hoping this is the start of something big).
So, I'd like to invite the people at Green Options to talk to us at Appropedia. Have a look around, e.g. have a look at WikiIndex, which lists sustainability wikis and international development wikis, of which only Appropedia is very active, most of the other wikis being dormant or spammed. Appropedia has been very open to change, including a change of  name if that's appropriate. And even if you're committed to your own wiki, we clearly have lots in common, and you look like a keen bunch of people with expertise and clever marketing ideas, and keen bloggers as well. I hope you contact us to discuss these things - looking forward to hearing from you.

Looking at this post, it might seem negative... I blame my sinuses, which are currently pressing on my brain and interfering with my thinking. But on a positive note, I'm sure there's some constructive way Appropedia and Green Options can work together.

Btw, there are some problems that need to be fixed immediately on the Green Options wiki, if they want to avoid losing potential contributors:
  • There's no edit tab on wiki pages - you have to figure out for yourself that registration is required.
  • The registration requirement makes spam less of a problem, but also raises the hurdle for contributors. (At Appropedia, we've moved to open editing, but we have enough people looking at the Recentchanges page to revert spam quickly. We're also looking into anti-spam and anti-vandal bots, and other tools.)
  • When registering, the CAPTCHA validation is almost impossible to read. (I had to refresh 6 times before I got a readable one.) Many people might give up.

Re: Village Earth AT Wiki

Well spotted! Actually we've had various discussion for some months, came to agreement, and have just started merging their wiki into ours - today in fact.

Village Earth seem like a fantastic, like-minded bunch, and I'm looking forward to working more closely with them.
