Let them eat cake... or cakey bread
The Sara Lee cake has more than 10% sugar! I guess they thought they were making a cheesecake. I went for a bread with "only" 3% sugar - that would already be on the sweet side in Australia. This bread has it in the form of corn syrup (Americans really are the corn people) but I'm more concerned with the total sugar.

This no longer shocks me, but I was stunned when I first found in a Boston supermarket that I couldn't find a wholewheat bread without corn syrup.

But one thing I like - it's much easier to find peanut butter without crap here. Just roasted peanuts and salt. And that (unlike the versions with extra crap) goes well in savory form as well - bread, peanut butter and freshly ground black pepper or chilli flakes. Optional dried oregano or mixed herbs. Mmmm.

*Yep, confirmed in this nutritional info on Australian supermarket breads - are several below 2% sugar, including some of my favorite breads. I'm pretty sure it would be similar in pretty much any Western country outside of North America.

Hmm, very satay-like. Will try.

Enjoying a Chipotle sauce at the moment. Bottle says "Very hot" but it's just sweet and a bit warm, and really tasty. Haven't tried on peanut butter yet tho.

When you come back to Boston, I'll take you to an actual bakery where they don't make bread with corn syrup, and to the Harvest Coop where you can grind your own peanut butter.

I also find it rather disconcerting that there's So Much Corn In Everything in this country. The first time I had (in Italy) a soda made with sugar, I was floored. "You mean pop can actually taste this good?" (And it was mass-produced Fanta, at that!)

Cool! I really like the grind-your-own peanut butter but there's only certain places you can get it in Sydney. It's nice to have an good option at the supermarket (awful < good < awesome sums up the peanut butters we're talking about.)

Corn isn't a big thing in Australia - corn syrup is rare, and soft drinks are made with sugar. I guess the Australian climate and perhaps the subsidy schemes don't favor corn so much.

At the Obama nomination in Denver, I went out looking for sustenance, and Coca Cola had a stand giving out samples. They had a "traditional style" lemonade made with sugar (I find it odd that that was worth declaring that on the label) and I'll confess it was very good, and I had more than one sample.
