I am slowly morphing into a Linux geek. My computer died, and I knew what to do.

Normally I'd log into safe mode, but it wouldn't even go that far. So I got my LiveCD, booted up, got in the #mandriva channel on IRC and asked for help. Someone with the handle notech explained how I could log in. It worked (though I don't know how). I then acted on a hunch that once I'd logged on, the system would fix itself (as I've found with logging into safe-mode in the paste.)

So, it wasted almost an hour - but considering the computer wouldn't start at all, that's not bad.

Someday soon I will blog on the importance of a Linux end-user wiki. That could help make Linux a more serious option for non-geeks.

A lot of distributions have end-user wikis, such as https://help.ubuntu.com/community/. There are also more general Linux wikis like (quick google search!) http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/Main_Page or http://linux.wikia.com/wiki/Linux_Wiki.

It's getting to be a more serious option for non-geeks; still a long way to go, but getting there.

They're separate low-profile wikis for now - and there's no clear place to go to share or find a solution that applies generally to Linux. (wiki.linuxquestions.org linuxquestions or linux.wikia.com could potentially fill that position, but will need some significant developments to get to that point.)

All these distro-specific wikis... It's like having separate Wikipedias for African history, British history, Indian history, post-colonial studies etc. Limits the profile and breaks up the content.

There is no really good end-user Linux wiki now.
