21st-Sep-2008 01:00 am - Finding the good egg
server is down
For buyers of eggs in American shops:  what the labels on your egg carton mean. I for one would rather have more expensive eggs less often, knowing the chickens haven't been abused to save me a few cents per egg. I'll be looking for the words “animal welfare approved.”

Edit: “U.S.D.A. organic” means the birds cannot be given antibiotics, even if ill. Sounds extreme to me. So sick birds may not get the best treatment, or they may be treated and (I would assume) moved to a different, non "organic" flock. My concern with eggs is what kind of life the chickens have.

We're living longer than ever, so I don't buy all of the fear about chemicals in our food being such a disaster. I think it's the obvious things like white flour and sugar that do us the most harm. It's not clear to me that antibiotics are severely misused, at least with free range chickens (and it's only free range that I'll buy).
