21st-Oct-2009 08:46 am - John Howard's economic solution?
ketep, merapi
An email from my brother, back in Australia where the economy is going strong.

When he refers below to "the libs," that's actually our conservative party, who were in power under the very cleverly populist John Howard, from 1996 to 2007:

And a poll today (in the Terrorgraph!*) found that most people believe we would have done much worse in the Great Financial Crush if the libs were in. Their solution would have been to give billions to big business, run a scare campaign about black people + halve everyone's wages.

Not far off, I suspect.

*Terrorgraph = Telegraph, Sydney's News Corporation newspaper. As in the T-shirt, "Is that true, or did you read it in the Telegraph?"

The Hon. Michael COSTA, MLCI  was speaking with an NSW MLC (that's like a State Senator) and asked a question about our State Treasurer:

Is Michael Costa more than just a self-interested thug?

they replied:

No.

Edit: I should add that I don't believe anyone is as simple as that. It's just a pity that Costa acts in a way that leads so many to this conclusion.

And the experts say:

PRESENTER: Do you think the Greens are on the right track here with their [drug] policy?
DR ALEX WODAK (Director of Drug and Alcohol Services at St Vincent's Hospital): Yes, I do. Yes I do … … the plain fact is that, whether we like it or not, the war on drugs has failed, and failed miserably.……..
Interview with Dr Alex Wodak on ABC 702 15 March 2007

"As a specialist in this field, I wholeheartedly support the Green Party's policy on drugs and congratulate them for their courage and honesty...And also urge the other parties to have the same courage and adopt harm minimisation policies without hesitation." Dr Fares Samara, MD, FAChAM (Fellow of the Australasian Chapter of Addictions Medicine)

I visited the website of a local club, Ashfield RSL, looking for info on their Latin dancing classes. This is an RSL club, supposedly a support organisation for men and women who have served or are serving in the Australian Defence Force. The splash screen had nothing about serving those who served the country. No "Lest we forget." Nothing even about "serving the community," e.g. by providing affordable nights out and dancing lessons. No, it's a cat lying back with a fistful of cash, below the words "The Lucky Club."

Btw, I just learnt that the song Blow Up The Pokies (which most Australians will recognize) was apparently written about a friend of the singer who took his own life after losing a lot of money to a gambling addiction.
