| I rented a pushbike in Bali. Greenest form of transport - apart from walking, and I needed something faster. Cheaper than taxis - and often faster than cars in this congested tourist area. Cheaper and safer than motorcycle taxis, particularly as I stick to the alleys where possible, and only occasionally perform the Indonesian practice of riding on the wrong side of the road at night with no lights. And what's more, people don't try to sell me things - I'm moving too fast for them. It's great.
And it's good exercise. With swimming, cycling and a bit of yoga, I'm feeling pretty fit.
But apart from all that, I just love being on a bike. And the other night, as I cycled around trying to find a better vantage point to view the the lunar eclipse, I got something extra. A small bat flitted around - I've often seen them at night but never had a proper look at one, as they never stay still. But for a couple of seconds it flew near my bike, up and to my right. I could see its leathery wings flapping rapidly, before it changed direction again and was gone. |
